The academy is unlocked at castle level 159.
With the academy you can research different things with tech. The things you can research increase a variety of stats whether it be offline gathering speed, troop carrying load, to marching speed increase.
Three of the most important things to focus on once you unlock the academy (in my opinion) are the first and second assists which allow your troops to have three heroes per march and troop capacity which increases your troops by a total of three.
The academy is an easy and very important way to improve your game both in experience and personal strength.
